Red Rock members' golf tourney in second year
Sunrise Colony Co. recently sponsored the second annual Sunrise Colony Cup golf tournament at Red Rock Country Club, an event that pitted members of the guard-gated community in Summerlin against members of two out-of-state communities developed by the company. The challengers were members of the Indian Ridge Country Club in Palm Desert, Calif., and the Royal Oaks Country Club in Houston. "It is very progressive for a developer to sponsor a golf tournament for its members in three different states," Rob Blackburn, head golf professional at Red Rock Country Club, said. "The Sunrise Colony Cup competition has generated a lot of excitement and competitiveness among the three clubs." The tournament was played in a 54-hole Ryder Cup format with three matches: four-ball, foursome and singles. Competing on behalf of defending champion Red Rock Country Club were Blackburn; Allan Maher, assistant golf professional; Marty Barrett; Mike Darby; Joe Donald; Rusty Froats; Randy Hollister; Bob Huggins; Bob Ozar; Eric Petersen; Glenn Raynes; and Renee Raynes. Renee Raynes had the highest overall individual point total on the team, capturing three points in three matches. At the end of the two-day tourney, the team from Royal Oaks won the championship with 15 1/2 points, while the Red Rock team captured second with 12 points. Indian Ridge finished third with 8 1/2 points. The tournament was played on the first of two Arnold Palmer-designed courses at the community, which is adjacent to the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. The 18-hole course features a rugged terrain highlighted by canyons with 100-foot drops, lakes, waterfalls and streams. The course is complemented by a practice facility with a double-ended driving range, putting green and chipping areas. Additional amenities include a main clubhouse measuring 44,000 square feet with a golf shop, banquet facilities, a board room and two dining rooms. An 8,000-square-foot sports club houses health and fitness equipment, saunas, steam rooms, an aerobics studio, locker rooms and a supervised children's play area. The aquatic center features a family pool, spa, an adults-only pool, a lap pool, a splash-and-spray mini-park and an outdoor grill. The tennis center features nine hard-surface courts, including a stadium court and five lighted courts. To visit, take Sahara Avenue west past Town Center Drive and follow the signs. Or, take Interstate 215 to Sahara go west. Sales office hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Sunrise Colony Co. is also developing the guard-gated, age-qualified community of Siena in Summerlin.
