Hughes Corp. celebrates school's debut

A dedication ceremony was held recently at Staton Elementary, the newest public elementary school to open in the master-planned community of Summerlin, a development of The Howard Hughes Corp.

As part of the event, Hughes Corp. executive Stew Gibbons presented a check for $8,000 to Principal Mark Christensen. The donation included $3,000 to sponsor the dedication ceremony, and a $5,000 gift in recognition of the developer's fund-raising program, "Coins for Computers."

Hughes Corp. started the program several years ago to enhance technology at new public elementary schools within Summerlin. Staton is the fifth school to benefit from the program.

Last January, the pupils received coins banks and were encouraged to save their spare change. Hughes Corp. pledged to match the amount the youngsters saved to as much as $5,000. The children's savings totaled about $1,500, but the company came through with the full amount pledged.

"The Coins for Computers program empowers students in two ways: first, students get directly involved in an effort to better their school, and second, they enhance their school's computer resources." Gibbons said. "Without question, the most exciting benefit of this program is the way it boosts school pride."

Summerlin is comprised of villages, each with a major park or golf course. It features two Tournament Players Club golf courses, a Jack Nicklaus Bear's Best course and five others. There are more than 100 parks, 45 completed miles of trails, 16 public and private schools, houses of worship, cultural facilities, shopping centers, medical centers, business parks, and more than 150 model homes.

Single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums are priced from under $100,000 to more than $700,000. Custom lots from one-quarter acre to three-quarters of an acre are priced from under $100,000 to more than $1 million, and predesigned custom homes are priced from $500,000 to more than $1 million. Apartments offer monthly rents starting from the $700s.

To visit the home finding center, travel west on Sahara Avenue past Hualapai Way to Town Center Drive. Or, take Interstate 215 to the Sahara exit. Office hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
