Summerlin Children's Forum hands out two scholarships

The Summerlin Children's Forum, a nonprofit organization dedicated to youngsters in the master-planned community, has awarded scholarships to two recent high school graduates.

Kristin Still of Cimarron-Memorial High School and William Hsingyo Ma of Palo Verde High School were each presented with a $5,000 scholarship during the fifth annual "Evening of Excellence" organized by the forum to honor individuals within the Summerlin educational community.

Still is a Nevada Scholar, which means she ranks among the top 10 percent of students in Nevada. She graduated with a 4.32 grade point average and is ranked 32nd out of 496 students. Still is a member of the National Honor Society and volunteers at Opportunity Village and libraries.

Ma, who is one of three valedictorians in his class, maintained straight A's while enrolled in numerous honors and advanced placement classes. In his three years as a member of the National Honor Society, Ma accumulated more than 300 hours of community service.

Other outstanding students, as well as parents and teachers, were also recognized at the event, which honored a total of 45 people.

Dan Van Epp, president of The Howard Hughes Corp., the developer of Summerlin, said the scholarships are "being put to good use."

"These kids are so talented, so bright and so accomplished," he said. "The Forum is proud to help them maximize their potential and fulfill their aspirations."

Summerlin is unfolding in villages, each with its own major park or golf course. It is home to two Tournament Players Club golf courses, Jack Nicklaus' Bear's Best golf course and five others.

Summerlin is also home to nearly 100 neighborhood and village parks, more than 45 completed miles of trails, 16 public and private schools, houses of worship, shopping centers, business parks, medical centers, and nearly 150 model homes.

Houses, townhomes and condominiums are priced from under $100,000 to more than $700,000. Custom lots from one-quarter acre to three-quarters of an acre are priced from the mid-$100,000s to more than $1 million, and predesigned custom homes are priced from $500,000 to more than $1 million.

Apartments offer monthly rental prices starting from the $700s.

To visit the Summerlin home finding center, travel west on Sahara Avenue past Hualapai Way to Town Center Drive, or take Interstate 215 West and exit at Sahara. The center is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
