Summerlin's activities aid valedictorian
Summerlin's schools and extracurricular activities contributed to Thomas DeVoe Steffen's academic success. Steffen, who enrolled in third grade at Lummis Elementary School when it opened in 1993, is graduating from Palo Verde High School, where he is valedictorian. "Summerlin has provided a wonderful environment in which to raise our children and give them a quality education in the public school system," John Steffen, Thomas' father, said. "We appreciate Summerlin's commitment to education, extracurricular activities and family values." The Steffens were one of the first families to move into Summerlin, settling in The Hills village in 1991. Steffen participated in community and school activities. He plays guitar and piano, and performed community service as an Eagle Scout. For nearly a decade, he played in the community's basketball and baseball leagues, and was on his high school's varsity basketball and volleyball teams. "Thomas' success in sports can be attributed to the great programs sponsored and encouraged by Summerlin. Participating in Summerlin's various sport leagues has helped him develop the skills and confidence needed to excel in high school sports," John Steffen said. Steffen will attend Brigham Young University on a full scholarship and plans to pursue a career in medicine. "I consider the scholarship to BYU one of my greatest accomplishments. Both of my parents graduated from BYU and I have always wanted to go there," Steffen said. Summerlin has ranked as the nation's best-selling master-planned community for 10 of the past 11 years, according to independent surveys.
