Nevada Power energy consultant aids area resident

SPECIAL TO REAL ESTATE

Charles and Jackie Britt considered ways to enhance the energy efficiency of their 11-year-old home after their monthly energy bill had increased significantly. Jackie Britt contacted Nevada Power Co. for assistance.

"We wanted to know why our energy bill was so high, but more importantly, we wanted to learn what we could do in the future to reduce it," she said.

The company arranged for Mario Gomez from its energy consulting team to visit the couple's home.

"With the rising cost of energy, saving energy is saving money," Gomez said. "It's a simple payback, and we encourage all of our customers to be more energy conscious in order to save their energy dollars."

Gomez detailed the Britts' energy bill, conducted an inspection of their home, then provided an analysis of their energy use and identified areas of concern.

"We help our customers to better understand their energy bill and their overall energy use, allowing the customer to monitor both more accurately," Gomez said.

"I gave the Britts a high grade in energy conservation, but there were a few additional ways the couple could save on their energy bill, including replacing old appliances with Energy Star appliances; adding more insulation to their attic; changing air filters at least once every 30 days; changing incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescent bulbs; reducing the use of their spa; and limiting cooking and the use of other heat-producing appliances like dryers and dishwashers during the hottest part of the day."

The Britts followed Gomez's advice and look forward to an energy bill that reflects the changes they made.

Nevada Power is a member of Nevada Energy Star Partners, a voluntary coalition of Southern Nevada home builders, developers, retailers, finance companies, energy consultants and utility companies promoting energy saving.
