Efficient homes reduce energy costs

To help consumers save on their energy costs, the Department of Energy has compiled a few suggestions that can help.

With typical single-pane windows, air conditioners work two to three times harder in the summer, according to the department's Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Network. A helpful solution would be to replace the windows with dual-pane windows made of high-performance glass, such as low-e or spectrally selective. And in hot climates, where the outside of the window is typically hotter, low-e coatings work best on the interior of the outside window pane, whereas in cold climates, the coatings work best on the inside.

Air leakage is another potential energy loss, and can be prevented by caulking, sealing and weatherstripping all seams, cracks, and openings to the outside. These actions can reduce energy costs by as much as 10 percent.

Choosing the right appliances is also important. The Network suggests selecting water heaters and heating and cooling systems with Energy Star ratings, as well as thermostats that are Energy Star programmable.

Homeowners can save as much as 10 percent annually on utility costs by setting back their thermostats 10 percent to 15 percent for eight hours. Installing an automatic setback or programmable thermostat is also beneficial.

New energy-efficient mortgages and home improvement loans are another resource for homeowners.

Local builders have joined the effort by constructing homes that have earned the Energy Star designation. Such homes incorporate energy savings into the design and construction, and use at least 30 percent less energy for cooling, heating and water heating than a standard home.

Energy Star is a voluntary program managed by the Environmental Protection Agency with assistance from the DOE.

A special Web site, www.NevadaEnergyStarHomes.com, lists all partners and includes a map showing participating neighborhoods.
