Pools rule in Summerlin

Swimming pools play a major role in Summerlin's recreational plan, according to Larry Brocato, executive vice president of The Howard Hughes Corp., the community's developer.

"The Southern Nevada climate dictates the need for a diverse range of swimming pools, and this amenity ranks among the most popular in the community, particularly during the hot summer months," Brocato said.

Pools are featured in The Arbors, The Willows and The Trails villages.

Veterans Memorial Olympic Swimming Pool, which opened last year in The Arbors, was designed primarily for competitive swimmers. It has 25-meter and 100-meter laps; ranges from 3 to 12 feet deep; and features two diving boards, a shallow play area and handicap access. It was deeded to Las Vegas after Hughes Corp. built it.

The Summerlin Council operates pools in The Willows and The Trails.

The Willows' resort-style pool features a beach-style entrance, a water slide and spray fountain.

The community's first pool at The Trails opened in 1996. It has six lap lanes, a dive tank and separate wading pool.

Pool-related activities planned by the council for residents include the Big Splash contest, a pool party and diving/jumping exhibition; "Dive-in Movies," where residents and guests watch movies projected on a big screen while relaxing in the pool; and the annual Super Bowl Plunge, in which residents slide into a 42-degree pool in January.

In addition, more than 300 community residents are enrolled in water classes at the pools, according to Brock Wilson, the council's recreation supervisor.

"The pools are designed for a variety of activities. Competitive and recreational swimmers, along with the divers, floaters and splashers, all have a place here in Summerlin," Wilson said.

Summerlin, which has ranked as the nation's best-selling master-planned community for 10 of the past 11 years, is home to eight golf courses, 105 parks, more than 100 miles of trails, schools, houses of worship, shopping centers, medical facilities, cultural facilities, and business parks.

Nearly 150 of the available single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums are modeled and are priced from the mid-$100,000s to more than $700,000. Custom-home sites in The Ridges are priced from the $500,000s to more than $1 million, and predesigned custom homes are priced from $2.1 million.

Apartments offer rents starting from the high $700s.
