Anthem tennis event nets lovers

Kevin Johnson, a tennis instructor and Sun City Anthem resident, makes the sport fun for his neighbors at the age-qualified community in Henderson.

Johnson, who has coached and played tennis most of his life, coordinates round robin events at the Anthem Center.

"Round robin is a social event. All the tennis club members come together. There are four games going, with four members to each court. Each person serves, the team gives its score, and then you get a new partner. It's all about having a good time," Johnson said.

The next event is tentatively scheduled for this week.

"The round robin is not like a tournament because it is played just for fun," he said.

Johnson also offers tennis lessons for residents.

"Most of my students have played tennis before, so I teach the basics, up to a 4-0 level, which is a pretty good tennis player."

Johnson and his wife, Cindy, moved to the community from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, in 2001. They are originally from Federal Way, Wash., where he taught high school social studies and photography, as well as coaching tennis. Cindy Johnson was an elementary school teacher for 30 years and now teaches art at the community's center.

Homes in the community range from 1,235 to 3,175 square feet and are priced from the low $200,000s to more than $500,000.

To visit, take Eastern Avenue south, two miles past St. Rose Parkway, turn left on Anthem Parkway and then turn right on Alexandria Drive. Models are open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
