Summerlin medical center grows with community

Summerlin Hospital Medical Center opened in 1997 with dual six-story towers and a 40-acre campus. Through subsequent expansion projects, the medical facility has been able to keep pace with the growth of its surrounding community, according to K.D. Justyn, chief executive of the hospital.

"Our early expansions to accommodate the growing needs of the community have come sooner than expected, but we have been able to meet those demands without a hitch," she said.

The first project came in 1999, when the size of the intensive care unit was doubled. More recently, two beds were added to the level II special care nursery, and a second endoscopy suite was opened. By the end of summer, a second CT scanner will have been installed.

More plans are under way, according to Justyn, including the expansion of the OB/GYN unit by 26 patient rooms and the addition of five new surgery suites by next spring. Also, equipment for the hospital's emerging Retina Institute of Nevada is being purchased. And already with 169 patient rooms, most of them private, Universal Health Services Inc., parent company of the hospital, has approved three additional floors in the north patient tower. This project will add about 100 licensed beds in private patient rooms.

Summerlin aligns the western edge of the valley. It is comprised of villages, each with a major park or golf course. The community features two Tournament Players Club golf courses, a Jack Nicklaus Bear's Best golf course and five others. There are also nearly 100 village and neighborhood parks, more than 90 completed miles of trails, 16 schools, houses of worship, shopping centers, business parks, medical centers, and nearly 130 models.

Single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums are priced from less than $100,000 to more than $700,000. Custom lots from one-quarter acre to three-quarters of an acre are priced from the mid-$100,000s to more than $1 million, and predesigned custom homes are priced from $500,000 to more than $1 million. Apartments offer monthly rents starting from the $700s.

To visit the community's home finding center, take Sahara Avenue west, past Hualapai Way, to Town Center Drive. Or, take Interstate 215 to the Sahara exit. Office hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
