Summerlin commits to culture

From a performing arts center to an outdoor festival that showcases sidewalk art, Summerlin embraces culture, according to the developer.

"The Howard Hughes Corp. initially envisioned Summerlin as a complete community where residents could live, work, play and learn," said Kim Haley, associate director of marketing for the community's developer. "Because the learning experience extends beyond school, Hughes committed from the beginning to develop cultural facilities, such as the library and performing arts center, and to provide residents with cultural access through special events."

The 36,000-square-foot Donald W. Reynolds Cultural Center houses a professional ballet troupe, as well as a children's academy with seven dance studios. Additionally, the Summerlin Library and Performing Arts Center contains more than 130,000 books and features a nearly 300-seat theater that is booked each weekend more than a year in advance.

Special events throughout the year include Shakespeare Under the Stars; Celebration of the Arts, a weekend festival that incorporates La Strada dell'Arte, a sidewalk chalk painting exhibition and demonstration; Friday Night Live concerts; and Las Vegas Philharmonic's Independence Day celebration at The Hills Park.

"A true community is about much more than houses or neighborhoods. It's about social interaction, lifelong learning, well-spent leisure and exposure to new and enriching experiences. We're proud to say Summerlin is just such a place," Haley said.

Summerlin, which is located along the valley's western rim, ranked as the country's best-selling master-planned community for much of the last decade, according to independent surveys. It is home to parks, trails, houses of worship, shopping and business centers, medical facilities, and nearly 120 model homes.

Single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums are priced from the $300,000s to more than $2 million. Custom-home sites are priced from the $500,000s.

Apartments offer monthly rents starting from the low $800s.
