Family leads pack at Summerlin's Firecracker 5K
The Sestos -- Giampaolo, Kellie, Kylie and Gianni -- are Summerlin's "runningest" family, according to Brock Wilson, recreation supervisor for The Summerlin Council, the nonprofit arm of the Summerlin Community Association. The Sestos, who have raced in every Summerlin Firecracker 5K since its inception in 1994, were among the more than 150 runners who participated in the 5-kilometer run and 1-mile fun walk on July 4. The event, which originated with the annual Summerlin Patriotic Parade, is the community's most popular run. Running is a favorite pastime for the Sestos. Giampaolo Sesto has been running for more than a decade and in international races. "I think I have run more miles than I have driven my car," he said. "But I love it. It is great for the body and mind, and I am thrilled that my family enjoys running together." According to Kellie Sesto, running has always been a family activity. "It promotes a healthy lifestyle, and it is inspirational," she said. "Watching members of our family excel, and sharing in their success, has united us as a family." Kylie, 12, and Gianni, 10, both attribute their love of running to their parents. "I am thankful for parents who encourage us to be active and athletic," Kylie said. Both are also active in other sports, including swimming. In addition to the Firecracker 5K, the council organizes other competitive runs and fun walks such as the "Spring into Summer" and "Monster Dash." Developed by The Howard Hughes Corp. in the western valley, Summerlin is home to eight golf courses, 107 neighborhood and village parks, and trails. Nearly 150 models of single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums are featured and priced from the mid-$100,000s to more than $700,000. Custom-home sites in The Ridges are priced from the $500,000s to more than $1 million, and predesigned custom homes are priced from $2.1 million. Apartments offer monthly rents starting from the high $700s. For more information, visit www.reviewjournal.com/realestate and click on the Summerlin link.
