Energy Star labeled homes reduce heating, cooling costs

An Energy Star labeled home is one of the best investments a family can make, according to Sam Rashkin, national director of the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star for Homes program.

"Lower energy costs are built into every Energy Star labeled home," Rashkin said. "Compared with the national model energy code, today's Energy Star homes are at least 30 percent more energy efficient. So, you can expect to save hundreds of dollars on utility bills annually."

A coalition of Southern Nevada developers, energy inspection and certification companies, mortgage lenders and other nonbuilder partners have joined together to educate consumers about the benefits of owning such homes.

"Energy Star homes perform better, thanks to energy-efficient features like airtight construction and duct work, effective insulation, high-efficiency heating and cooling equipment and design, and high-performance windows," Rashkin said. "As a result, owners of Energy Star homes enjoy quieter and healthier living environments with fewer drafts and more consistent temperature levels."

The Energy Star Program is a partnership between the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy.

"In locations like Las Vegas, with relatively little cloud cover, house attics can reach temperatures as high as 170 degrees," said Rebecca Oscarson, regional sales manager of ConSol's ComfortWise, an Energy Star program that uses specific features.

"In an Energy Star home, all floors are more evenly cooled and heated throughout the year, and less energy is used to do it. And using less energy at home saves money while providing tremendous environmental dividends (for everyone)."
