Patriotic spirit: A Summerlin Fourth

The Fourth of July in Summerlin was celebrated from dawn to dusk with a series of events, beginning with an early morning race -- the Firecracker 5K -- and concluding with an outdoor concert at The Hills park featuring the Las Vegas Philharmonic and fireworks spectacular.

The master-planned community also marked Independence Day with a 60-entry parade -- the ninth annual Summerlin Patriotic Parade -- along with a three-on-three basketball tournament for residents.

Celebrating America's birthday has always been a major celebration within the community, according to Dan Van Epp, president of The Howard Hughes Corp., developer of Summerlin.

"Just as Summerlin has grown into America's best-selling community, its Independence Day celebration has evolved into a day-long series of events designed to unite residents and the entire community in a show of patriotism and good old-fashioned fun," Van Epp said. "The parade, which began with a few dozen community kids riding decorated bikes, now features more than 60 entries, including floats, marching bands, community organizations and performing groups. There's no denying that Summerlin is the place to be on July Fourth."
