Search for country club lifestyle leads to Anthem

Native Californian Paul Johnson wanted the best in a home, and to him that meant Del Webb Corp.'s Anthem Country Club in Henderson.

"I was looking for a private club because people tend to be more involved on many levels. I wanted to join a country club where I am a part owner; it makes a major difference," said Johnson, a shopping center developer and retired dentist who moved to the valley two years ago.

"For many years, I'd stay at different hotels in different areas of town to become familiar with the valley. The value at Anthem Country Club was much much greater, and the Anthem lifestyle was what I was looking for."

Johnson and his fiance, Cindy Carden, are in the process of designing a desert contemporary-style custom home on a half-acre lot at the country club.

The community's private 7,300-yard, par-72, 18-hole championship golf course, designed by PGA golfer Hale Irwin and designer Keith Foster, factored in Johnson's building decision.

"I like the staff, clubhouse, pro shop, the way you are treated as a VIP," Johnson said.

"The course itself is well laid out. It's interesting and challenging and taken care of extremely well. At about 4,000 feet, the course plays differently each time. It will never be boring ... Anthem Country Club's course features dramatic views of the valley from every hole. A bonus is the incredible vistas of the valley. This is a first-class golf course with a first-class staff."

Custom-home sites offer views of the city, mountains or golf course and range from one-third acre to more than 2 acres. Sites are priced from $265,000 to more than $1.1 million. Each custom-home neighborhood has a gated entrance within the community.

The country club is part of Del Webb Corp.'s 5,000-acre Anthem master plan. Twenty floor plans are offered in four collections of homes, priced from the $190,000s to more than $1 million.

To visit, take Interstate 215 to Eastern Avenue and proceed about three miles south of St. Rose Parkway. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
