Tennis proves popular at Sun City Anthem
Not content to just sit at home and watch their favorite sport on television, many residents of the age-qualified Sun City Anthem community in Henderson take to the tennis courts on a regular basis for fun and fitness. "Playing tennis is a great way to socialize and stay fit at the same time," Barbara Sovde, president of the community's tennis club, said. "Players of all levels are welcome to join. ... We recently held round robbins which are always a lot of fun." Mixed doubles tournaments were held in the spring, and men's doubles tournaments were held in late May. Tennis clinics are also conducted for beginners, advanced beginners and intermediates. Warming up before playing tennis is important and is made easy at the community's fitness center. The center offers a variety of cardiovascular equipment, treadmills, recumbent bikes, cross trainer machines, strength training machines, cable crossovers and freeweights. The fitness center is located in Anthem Center, a 77,363-square-foot facility that also offers residents social and recreational opportunities, as well as Trumpets Restaurant and Lounge, which is open to the public. The facility also provides a computer lab with Internet access and classes; crafts rooms for sewing and quilting; ceramics; water painting and other art classes; and several special interest clubs. A resource room, billiards, shuffleboard, poker tables and meeting rooms are also featured. "It's all about helping residents define their own lifestyle with fitness, hobby and craft facilities, and plenty of space for social activities," Lorraine Roberts, sales manager, said. "We try to anticipate every desire for the people of Sun City Anthem." Also featured at the community is The Revere, which offers two 18-hole championship golf courses created by PGA golfer Billy Casper and architect Greg Nash -- the Lexington and the Concord. Homes are priced from the mid-$140,000s to more than $500,000s at the community. Nineteen models are featured, ranging from 1,080 to 3,009 square feet. To visit, take Eastern Avenue south, past St. Rose Parkway, and turn left on Anthem Parkway. Models are open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
