Summerlin plans old-fashioned Fourth of July

The master-planned community of Summerlin will celebrate the Fourth of July with a parade, followed by a concert and fireworks show, according to Stew Gibbons, executive vice president of The Howard Hughes Corp., which oversees Summerlin development.

"The Fourth of July has always been a much-celebrated holiday in Summerlin," Gibbons said. "In fact, the day's events have gotten so big, we've invited the whole valley to celebrate America's birthday with us."

The parade, which began as a community resident event in 1996 and is sponsored by the Summerlin Council, begins at 9 a.m. at Hillpointe and Hills Center drives, and ends at the Trails Village shopping center.

Last year, hundreds of participants marched among the showcase of floats and decorated vehicles. This year, 50 entries are scheduled, including an appearance by Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman. For more information on the parade, call 341-5500.

In the evening, the Las Vegas Philharmonic performs, featuring patriotic tunes. The music will be followed by a fireworks extravaganza. Tickets for the nighttime entertainment are $20 for adults, $10 for children ages five to 18, and free for youngsters under four. For tickets and information on the concert, call 258-5438.

Developed by The Howard Hughes Corp., Summerlin has ranked as the nation's best-selling master-planned community for eight of the past nine years, according to Robert Charles Lesser & Co.

The community, located in the western valley, features two Tournament Players Club golf courses, a Jack Nicklaus' Bear's Best course and five others. Other amenities include nearly 100 parks, more than 45 completed miles of trails, 16 public and private schools, houses of worship, shopping centers, business parks, medical centers, and nearly 135 model homes.

Houses, townhomes and condominiums are priced from less than $100,000 to more than $700,000. Custom lots measuring from one-quarter acre to three-quarters of an acre are priced from the mid-$100,000s to more than $1 million, and predesigned custom homes are priced from $500,000 to more than $1 million. Monthly rents for apartments start from the $700s.

To visit the home finding center, take Sahara Avenue west, past Hualapai Way, to Town Center Drive. Or, take Interstate 215 to Sahara. The office is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
