Southern Highlands Golf Club to host tournament

The Southern Highlands Golf Club in the southwestern valley will play host to some top collegiate golfers when the 2002 Callaway Golf Las Vegas Men's Intercollegiate Tournament is played there in early March.

"This year's Callaway Golf Intercollegiate is set to be one of most exciting college golf tournaments in the country," Jay Davis, club manager, said.

"To host such an event is a real honor, and I look forward to some extraordinary golf and I know that all the teams will enjoy the course. Of course, we will be pulling for our own hometown team, UNLV."

The event, billed as "a tournament featuring future PGA Tour superstars," will feature the last four NCAA Division I National Championship teams; Bubba Dickerson, the current U.S. Amateur Champion and Western Amateur Champion; two Public Links Champions, D.J. Trahan and Chez Reavie; 15 All-Americans; and 16 of the top Division I golf teams from across the country.

The club also serves as the host course for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, golf team, which will play in the tournament, as well as a host course for the PGA Tour's Invensys Classic.

A 7,381-yard, par-72 course designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and Robert Trent Jones Jr. highlights the facility, and is characterized by elevation changes, rolling terrain, streams, lakes and waterfalls.

The facility's 42,000-square-foot clubhouse, fashioned after a Tuscan manor, features a library, wine room, locker rooms, dining and golf shop. In addition, five 1,400-square-foot golf cottages are available as vacation residences.

The Estates lies behind the guarded gates of the club and features custom-home sites along the course.

It features Vintage Valley, which contains 71 one-half acre lots. Tree-lined streets, a European-style park with a basketball court and children's play area highlight the neighborhood. The custom-home sites are priced from $250,000 to $800,000.

Residents can join the fitness center at the club. Soon to be under construction, the 12,000-square-foot center will offer such amenities as a training area, private steam rooms, massage and treatment rooms, a pool, and tennis courts. Spinning, Pilate's and yoga classes will also be offered.

Southern Highlands also features more than 40 acres of parks and miles of interconnected bike and jogging trails.

To visit the community, take Interstate 15 to the Lake Mead Drive exit and head west, following the signs.

Sales offices are open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
