Pulte builds for energy efficiency
Dave Beck believes energy efficiency in a home is more than just a perk -- it's a necessity. The construction executive said several components used by Pulte Homes in its housing allow home buyers to save money on heating and cooling their home. One of those components is Cocoon cellulose insulation, which is blown into the walls, forming a tight, even seal around objects such as wiring, plumbing and framing materials. It prevents convective heat transfer, a primary source of energy loss. "Cocoon cellulose insulation is blown into the walls while damp and forms a stiff protective barrier," Beck said. "It fills even the tiniest spaces protecting against air leaks, bugs and mold." Another energy-saving feature are low E windows. These vinyl-framed, dual-pane, spectrally-selective windows reduce heat, performing similarly to tinted windows, but with clear views. The windows also reduce ultraviolet rays that can fade furnishings. An efficient and properly fitted heating and air conditioning system is yet another energy-saving feature. The builder also uses Environments for Living building technology, which is been designed for safety, durability, affordability and comfort. "My husband and I love our energy-efficient home," said Rita Cream, a Pulte homeowner. "It is always so comfortable, and we never worry about drafts in the winter and with our windows we don't worry about extreme heat in the summer." Such homes also offer a two-year heating- and cooling-cost guarantee from the builder. "When we bought our Pulte home, we were told what we would expect to pay for our heating and cooling bills and it has been right online with what they told us," Cream said. All of the company's homes in Southern Nevada are certified as Energy Star homes, which means they are built with tight construction and upgraded features to save as much as 30 percent on energy costs. The builder offers 12 active subdivisions in Southern Nevada. Pulte Homes Inc., the nation's largest home builder, has operations in 44 markets across the United States, Argentina, Puerto Rico and Mexico. Through its Del Webb operations, the company is also a leading builder of age-qualified communities.
