A junior at UNLV, Derek Schoen envisioned himself moving from his parents' northwest valley home into a one-bedroom apartment. That changed when Schoen's parents, Becky and Scott Snow, split the purchase price of a townhome with Derek at William Lyon's West Park Villas in Summerlin Centre.
"I assumed I'd be renting, and here I am owning," said Schoen, who moved into his townhome on New Year's Day. "My parents were interested in West Park from an investment standpoint and they thought I might like to live there. I thought it was awesome from the moment I visited. The whole thing took off from there."

Schoen selected Plan Three, a 1,674-square-foot townhome with four bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths and a two-car garage. The first floor features a kitchen with a pantry, living and dining area, laundry room and coat closet at the entry. The master and secondary bedrooms are located upstairs. Buyers can opt for a loft or study in lieu of the fourth bedroom.
Two of Schoen's best friends will soon become his housemates.
"The floor plan is so conducive to a roommate situation. We'll share the downstairs common area and each have a private section upstairs," he said.
A student of journalism and media studies, Schoen said he learned from the home-buying process.
"I can't even begin to describe the knowledge I gained during the process. I'd have no idea what I was reading but my parents were right there to help me. We got to deal with very good people from William Lyon and they also helped me learn so much," he said. "I wasn't looking to buy a home, but the way it all came along was perfect."
The development offers two- and three-story floor plans measuring 1,556 to 2,048 square feet. Designs allow for bonus rooms, tech centers, lofts or study options, based on floor plan.
Architectural highlights include covered entries, attached two-car garages and open kitchens. Security alarm pre-wiring, Cat 5 wiring in selected areas, designer plant shelves, custom-recessed lighting and raised-panel interior doors are standard.
The townhomes are priced from the low $300,000s.
West Park Villas' sister neighborhood, West Park Courtyards, features four two-story townhome designs with courtyard living areas. Floor plans range from 1,706 to 2,452 square feet with up to three bedrooms and as many baths. Prices start in the high $300,000s.
To visit, take Interstate 215, the Las Vegas Beltway, to Charleston Boulevard. Exit west and turn left on Plaza Centre Drive to the models. Model homes are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, except Monday when they open at noon.
