Anthem residents volunteer services

The Community Service Club, which assists fellow residents of Sun City Anthem with routine home maintenance and simple chores, has been formed at Del Webb's age-qualified community in Henderson.

"We will provide services like replacing furnace filters, smoke alarm batteries, transportation to doctors' visits, help caring for pets and so on for people who are unable to perform those duties," Jerry Gardberg, president, said. "We believe in giving mutual support to our fellow residents of Sun City Anthem."

As an example, Gardberg told of a woman who had surgery recently and will need help when she returns home.

"She will need some assistance, and we'll provide the resources and volunteers to help so she will not be alone," he said.

Although it's still in the organizational stages, the club has signed up about 100 volunteers. It also is in the process of collecting medical equipment such as wheelchairs and canes for people who may need them temporarily.

Formed in conjunction with the club is the Minuteman Foundation, a nonprofit organization that will raise funds to support its efforts.

The club meets once a month in the Anthem Center. The 77,363-square-foot center offers fitness, social and recreational opportunities for residents, as well as Trumpets Restaurant and Lounge, which is open to the public. Additional amenities include The Revere at Anthem Golf Club, which offers two 18-hole golf courses.

A former attorney and bank officer in Munster, Ind., Gardberg and his wife, Fran, first came to Las Vegas to attend his sister-in-law's wedding.

"They showed us where they planned to build their new home at Sun City Anthem. We stood looking over the golf course and mountains, and thought `this is the place to be,'" he said.

The couple bought the 2,234-square-foot Arlington plan, which features three bedrooms, breakfast area, a covered patio, and two-car garage plus golf cart storage.

Homes range from 1,235 to 3,175 square feet and are priced from the $170,000s to more than $500,000.

To visit, take Eastern Avenue south, two miles past St. Rose Parkway, turn left on Anthem Parkway and right on Alexandria Drive. Models are open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
