US Home to honor police dogs
US Home will dedicate a park in its Spanish Springs community on Wednesday in tribute to the K-9 Unit of the Metropolitan Police Department. The 1 p.m. ceremony is open to the public. The Rev. Steve Mues of St. Jude's Ranch For Children in Boulder City will officiate. The idea for the park honoring the department's dogs of service originated with Vicki Zoot, an executive at US Home, in response to the loss of Buddy, a police dog killed in the line of duty in October 2003. Buddy is also the name of the home builder's "spokesdog." The park will feature a plaque honoring the bravery and dedication of the K-9 Unit, and an American flag. The K-9 Unit is comprised of 15 officers and staff, and 29 dogs. To reach Spanish Springs, take U.S. Highway 95 to Craig Road, go west to Durango Drive and head north. Turn left on Lone Mountain Road and proceed to Fort Apache Road.
