Sun City Anthem appeals to family
After Shirley and Herb Alloway retired and moved to Sun City Anthem in Henderson last April, they invited her parents, Edith and Paul Bush, to visit. Immediately impressed by what they saw, the Bushes decided to purchase a home in the Del Webb age-qualified community, too -- right next door. The Alloways, who were married in Las Vegas five years ago, moved from Ventura, Calif., where both worked for the county social services department. Herb Alloway was a fiscal officer and Shirley Alloway was manager for the adult services division. "We started looking a year before retirement," Shirley Alloway said. "We kept coming back to Sun City Anthem. We liked the house and community so much, we decided to go ahead and retire early." The Alloways purchased a Monroe model in Golf Mesa Village. The home has two bedrooms, two baths, a great room, breakfast area and two-car garage; it measures 1,596 square feet. Herb Alloway said they enjoy the openness of the living-dining area and access from the master bedroom to the covered patio. "It's large enough for our needs. We had a two-story home in Ventura, but wanted to downsize," he said. The Bushes chose a Washington model, a 1,235-square-foot home with two bedrooms, two baths, a dining area, utility room and two-car garage. "For just the two of us, it was just the right fit," Paul Bush said. Herb Alloway volunteers with the community's security patrol and is a member of the computer club. Shirley Alloway enjoys the pool and exercising in Anthem Center, which offers fitness, social and recreational opportunities for residents, as well as Trumpets Restaurant and Lounge, which is open to the public. "It's easy to meet people ... especially with Dad around, he is very social," Shirley Alloway said, adding that there's a sense of community among the residents. "We're all here for the same reason. We like a safe, quiet, fun environment in which to live. We love it here," she said. Models range from 1,235 to 3,175 square feet and are priced from the $170,000s to more than $500,000. To visit, take Eastern Avenue south, two miles past St. Rose Parkway, turn left on Anthem Parkway and then turn right on Alexandria Drive. The model village is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
