Siena residents learn to tee off

Siena, an age-qualified village in Summerlin, is offering a six-week series of golf classes to introduce residents to the sport.

"We're limiting each group to only four -- either couples or friends -- at any skill level," community PGA golf professional Barry Walburn said. "If a husband and wife are at different levels, they can still learn together. The four-to-one student/teacher ratio allows me to tailor instruction to each student's level."

Classes will be held at the community's practice and learning facility, designed by course architects Brian Curley and Lee Schmidt of Scottsdale, Ariz.

The 18-hole course is open to the public on a daily-fee basis. Siena residents are given special rates and preferred tee times.

Golf conditioning classes are offered at the fitness center by Wayne Ireland, fitness center director. The classes emphasize increasing flexibility and building strength in the shoulders, arms and legs.

A 15,900-square-foot health and fitness center offers a swimming pool, spa, exercise facilities, saunas, steam rooms, locker rooms and fitness classes. Outdoor amenities include four lighted tennis courts, a pool, spa and bocce courts.

A wellness center provides education, including nutrition seminars, health screenings and literature. Destination Salon and Spa offers therapeutic massages, sports therapy and reflexology.

The community's 12,000-square-foot social center is used for classes, clubs and planned activities.

The community, developed by Sunrise Colony Co., offers homes priced from the mid-$160,000s to more than $650,000. About 1,900 single-story homes ranging from 1,200 to 3,100 square feet will be built, one-third of which will be on the golf course.

To visit, take Sahara Avenue or Interstate 215 to Town Center Drive and go south. The models are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
