Tennis on firm ground at Red Rock

Red Rock Country Club offers residents and members one of the finest tennis facilities available, according to Jeff Foley, tennis director for the community within Summerlin.

The tennis center features a stadium court where tennis exhibitions and tournaments are held, as well as nine lighted hard-surface courts with scheduled activities.

Foley, who came to Las Vegas 18 years ago to play for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, said the recent rise in the popularity of tennis has been good for the community.

"Tennis was in a lull in the 1980s and early 1990s, but it's making a huge comeback. It's a national trend and we see its popularity growing at every age level," Foley said. "Tennis, like golf, is a sport the whole family can play together."

Foley, along with head tennis pro Crombie Hatfield and tennis pro Ben Coates, holds individual and group tennis lessons for people of all ages and skill levels, including beginners and children as young as 3.

In addition to lessons, tournaments, tennis camps and social activities, the center has hosted some of the biggest names in the sport.

"Just a few weeks ago the National Collegiate Tennis Classic, featuring teams from Stanford, UCLA, Duke and UNLV, was held at Red Rock Country Club and in July 2000, our facilities hosted `Players for the Cure,' ... and featured the talents of Mary Pierce, Serena Williams and many others," Foley said.

Other amenities at the guard-gated community include two 18-hole championship golf courses built with canyons, lakes, waterfalls and streams. The courses also feature a practice facility.

The centerpiece of the community is its clubhouse, which overlooks the city, and offers elegant and casual dining. The Oasis Grille offers indoor and outdoor dining, and the Arroyo Room and a board room can be reserved for special events and meetings. Other amenities include a pro shop, locker rooms, saunas, steam rooms, lounges and media centers.

Also featured is a sports club, which has exercise equipment, saunas, steam rooms, an aerobics studio, massage therapy rooms, locker rooms and a supervised children's area. An expansion of the sports club is planned.

The sports club is also the entrance to the aquatic center, which features a family pool, therapeutic spa, adults-only pool, lap pool, children's splash-and-spray mini-park, and outdoor grill.

Upon completion, the country club will consist of 1,116 homes in a series of neighborhoods patrolled by roving security. Priced from the $350,000s to more than $2 million, the one- and two-story designs range from 2,100 to 5,300 square feet with as many as six bedrooms and four-car garages.

A design staff is available to assist buyers with upgrades and options. In addition, the Sunsation program allows for structural changes; room additions; and outdoor extras such as swimming pools, upgraded landscaping, patios and lighting designs.

Custom-home sites range from 15,000 to 20,000 square feet in The Estates, a gated neighborhood of 86 lots. They are priced from $315,000 to $500,000.

To visit, take Sahara Avenue west, past Town Center Drive, and follow the signs. Or, take Interstate 215 to Sahara. The sales center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
