Southern Highlands impresses lot buyers

Brian Brooks and Ken Dahlin recently discovered the ideal custom-home lot on which to build their home at The Estates at Southern Highlands. Their home site is located within Vintage Valley, a gated neighborhood comprised of 71 half-acre lots, tree-lined streets and a park.

Dahlin, an architect, said he knew the location was right from the start.

"There is a wonderful view of the 16th hole of the Southern Highlands Golf Club and the clubhouse," Dahlin said. "The lot is perfectly positioned to maximize the view, and the house will be designed to take advantage of it."

Brooks, a realty agent, agreed.

"We were looking for a lot that would blend with Ken's expertise," Brooks said. "That's his niche market, the soft Frank Lloyd Wright-type organic architecture. We needed a place where someone could appreciate that type of a home.

"When we stood out there on that lot, there was such a tremendous feeling. It was a combination of the view and the feel you get once you enter into The Estates. It's just such a strong feeling, it's hard to find it anywhere else."

Brooks and Dahlin opted to build the Sunset, a 6,000-square-foot residence with a home theater, a patio off the owner bedroom, and a hot tub.

"We had looked at most of the major golf course communities in the Las Vegas area very carefully," Dahlin said. "I had looked myself, from an architect's standpoint, at the architecture of the community and the surroundings. We wanted a special place, a place that would be commensurate with the neighborhood we would be building in. We wanted an estate that would reflect the beauty and elegance of the home."

The Estates is a guard-gated enclave of custom neighborhoods with lots measuring from one-half acre to more than one acre, and priced from $250,000 to $800,000.

Southern Highlands is located in the southwestern valley and home to the nationally ranked, members-only Southern Highlands Golf Club.

Residents of The Estates will enjoy private membership at the community's fitness center, which will soon be under construction. The 12,000-square-foot facility will include a training area, private steam rooms, massage and treatment rooms, a pool, and tennis courts. Members may also participate in Spinning, Pilate's and yoga classes.

Development plans at Southern Highlands include 40 acres of parks, play areas, and miles of bicycle and jogging trails. A village center is planned to offer a variety of shopping, dining and personal service venues.

To visit, take Interstate 15 to the Lake Mead Drive exit, head west and follow the signs. The sales office is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
