Hughes Corp. recognizes area youths' achievements

The Howard Hughes Corp. recently hosted the annual Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas' Youth of the Year dinner and presented this year's honoree with a $2,500 college scholarship.

Ambrosia Hafen-Hayes, a member of the North Las Vegas Boys & Girls Club, was named Youth of the Year during the dinner at The Gardens Community Center in Summerlin.

The program recognizes exemplary character, superior leadership skills, academic achievement and outstanding service to the Boys & Girls Clubs and the community.

"The Howard Hughes Corp. is pleased to be involved with an organization that encourages youth to excel in personal, social and educational goals," Tom Warden, vice president of community and government relations, said.

"We acknowledge the significant accomplishments of many of these young people who have overcome obstacles and succeeded despite adverse situations in their lives. We admire their strength and encourage them to keep moving forward in a positive direction."

Hafen-Hayes, a student at Clark High School, has been a member of the Boys & Girls Clubs since she was 7. She will have the opportunity to represent the Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas during state, regional and national competitions.

Traditionally, the national Youth of the Year recipient receives his or her award from the President of the United States.

Hafen-Hayes was selected from a field of six honorees. Other finalists were Harold Reed, a student at Cheyenne High School; Shaina Holmes and Ryan McNeel, students at Southern Nevada Vocational Technical Center; Alejandro "Alex" Mentado, a student at Clark High School; and Chanelle Hayes, a student at Cimarron-Memorial High School.

Hughes Corp. has underwritten the Youth of the Year program for three years.

Headquartered in Las Vegas, the company is developing real estate holdings of the late Howard R. Hughes Jr. It employs about 180 people in Southern Nevada. Major projects include the Summerlin master-planned community; Hughes Center, a mixed-use business center in central Las Vegas; and the Crossing Business Center, Corporate Pointe and several class-A office buildings in Summerlin.

The company is an affiliate of The Rouse Co.
