Religious diversity thrives in Summerlin

With nine religions represented by six houses of worship and another five facilities under construction, religious diversity is thriving in Summerlin.

"From its inception, Summerlin was designed to be a community for residents with a diverse range of ages and backgrounds," said Stew Gibbons, an executive with The Howard Hughes Corp., which oversees the development of the community. "As home to a growing list of worship facilities, Summerlin is continuing its evolution as a community where diversity is the rule and not the exception."

The most recent facility to open was the Red Rock Stake Center, the second chapel for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It is located on the northwest corner of Town Center Drive and Alta Drive in The Arbors village.

The Arbors is also home to the Hindu Temple and Cultural Center, which opened last year and is the first Hindu temple in Southern Nevada.

Also debuting last year was the Conservative Judaism Temple Beth Sholom, which is in The Willows village.

The Reform Judaism Temple Beth Am, which has been in a temporary facility, has completed its first phase of a preschool and senior day-care center. A sanctuary is planned for the second phase.

Construction of a multi-use facility for Desert Spring United Methodist Church was completed last year in The Arbors village. Future plans include a sanctuary and an education building.

Other religious organizations developing or in the planning stages of development include Grace in the Desert Episcopal Church, Red Rock Community Church, Summerlin Community Baptist Church and the Jewish Community Center of Southern Nevada. Other existing houses of worship include the Summerlin Evangelical Lutheran Church and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in The Pueblo village, and a Mormon chapel in The Hills village.

Summerlin aligns the western edge of the valley, and is comprised of villages. It has more than 60,000 residents.

Townhomes, condominiums and single-family homes are available, and priced from the mid-$100,000s to more than $700,000. More than 100 model homes are featured.

Custom lots as large as three-quarters of an acre are also available, and priced from the mid-$100,000s to more than $1 million. Predesigned custom homes are priced from $975,000. Apartments offer monthly rents from the $700s.

To visit the community's home finding center, take Sahara Avenue west, past Hualapai Way, to Town Center Drive. Or, take Interstate 215 to Sahara. The office is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
