Fitness first at Sun City Anthem

Del Webb Corp.'s fitness programs are designed to help residents of Sun City Anthem stay in good shape and to take maximum advantage of the resort lifestyle provided at the community for people age 55 and older.

"We create fun ways to provide for a healthy lifestyle," said Charlene Denzer, Sun City Anthem's fitness director and a certified exercise physiologist. "For example, we recently started a program called `Why Weight?' that focuses on a healthy approach to nutrition and exercise with an emphasis on healthy weight loss and behavioral modification.

"Sometimes people move to Las Vegas and discover the many hotel buffets. Then they realize they have a few extra pounds to get rid of. We help make healthy changes that will enhance their life here at Sun City Anthem."

The "Why Weight?" program provides a personalized and comprehensive exercise and nutrition program, group support, and incentive prizes over the course of eight weeks.

Also available to residents is the Anthem Wellness Advantage Program, which is operated through St. Rose Dominican Hospital. Craig Bailey, an exercise physiologist, is the program's coordinator. He said the program has more than 700 participants.

"The first thing we do is a fitness assessment, including the member's goals and a lifestyle questionnaire. Then we meet again to go over the results and discuss lifestyle changes they may want to make and set up an exercise program," Bailey said.

"I want our members to be healthy and happy with what they are doing. Fitness training should be an effective and safe experience."

Anthem Center's fitness facility is equipped with an indoor walking track, indoor swimming pool, outdoor pool and spa. There are also craft and club meeting areas in addition to a variety of classes, such as aerobics, available.

The fitness center also houses Trumpets Restaurant and Lounge, which is open to the public.

Sun City Anthem offers 19 models, ranging from 1,080 to 3,009 square feet and larger through the Gold Key program. Homes are priced from the low $140,000s to more than $500,000.

To visit the model village, take Eastern Avenue south, two miles past St. Rose Parkway. The sales office is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
