Snow Day marked in Summerlin

More than 1,500 residents of Summerlin recently enjoyed an afternoon of snow play and sledding in The Arbors Tennis & Play Park, where 50 tons of ground ice covered the hillside.

The master-planned community's ninth annual Snow Day was in full force as the temperature climbed to 70 degrees.

"Considering the weather, the event featured winter fun in a spring-like setting, capturing the best of both worlds," said Lezlie Barnson-DeNardin, director of community relations for The Summerlin Council. "Snow Day has become a much-anticipated tradition for Summerlin residents. Regardless of whether we're sledding in shirt sleeves or bundled up for the cold, it's the closest thing to an authentic winter experience in the desert and it's loads of fun for Summerlin families."

Snow Day is one of more than two dozen events planned by the council each year exclusively for Summerlin residents. The council is the nonprofit arm of the Summerlin Community Association.

"The opportunity to participate in a variety of unique and fun social and recreational events enhances the Summerlin lifestyle," Barnson-DeNardin said.

Summerlin is a development of The Howard Hughes Corp. It aligns the western valley and is comprised of villages. Resident amenities include eight golf courses, more than 100 parks, 105 miles of trails, 18 schools, houses of worship, shopping centers, medical facilities, cultural facilities, business parks, and 165 model homes.

Single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums are priced from the mid-$100,000s to more than $700,000.

Custom-home sites measuring from one-half acre to three-quarters of an acre at The Ridges are priced from the $400,000s to more than $1 million, and predesigned custom homes are priced from $500,000 to more than $1 million.
