Donations made on behalf of Hughes Corp.

The Howard Hughes Corp. made $10,000 in donations to five local nonprofit organizations in December. Recipients were Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada, Goodwill Industries of Southern Nevada, Outside Las Vegas, Ronald McDonald House and The Shade Tree Shelter.

"A true community is built when others become aware of those in need and offer assistance," Daniel C. Van Epp, president of Hughes Corp., said.

"This community's spirit is embodied by these nonprofit organizations that have done much to improve the quality of life for Southern Nevadans, especially those in need. We commend their contributions and encourage others to support them in their cause."

The donation to Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada was made in the name of the late Joe Foley. The organization is dedicated to helping the less fortunate through a range of social service programs, including adoptions, to which this donation is being directed at the request of the Foley family.

Goodwill of Southern Nevada, an organization that provides training, employment and job placement services for people with disabilities and other special needs, will use the donation to assist in training mentally impaired adults for the work force. Goodwill encourages corporations to support its efforts by hiring graduates of its job-training program or donating gently used clothing and items to its retail centers.

Outside Las Vegas is dedicated to preserving federal public lands surrounding the valley, enriching the experience of its visitors, enhancing the quality of life for residents, and promoting community stewardship of these resources. The organization will use the money to support its Forever Earth program, which educates the public about environmental issues.

Ronald McDonald House is a home-away-from-home for the families of seriously ill children receiving treatment at nearby hospitals. The Las Vegas house, which is one of more than 200 worldwide, accommodates as many as 12 families. The donation will be used to provide food and supplies for families visiting the house.

Shade Tree is an emergency shelter for women and children in crisis situations. It will use the donation for shelter operations, including the purchase of household and personal hygiene items.

Hughes Corp. is developing the real estate holdings of the late Howard R. Hughes Jr. The company's major project is Summerlin, which has ranked as America's best-selling master-planned community nine of the past 10 years, according to independent surveys.

Spanning the western edge of the valley, the community encompasses 22,500 acres and is currently home to more than 65,000 residents.

Another of its projects is Hughes Center, a business center and financial district that houses more than 100 companies.

Hughes Corp.'s parent organization, The Rouse Co., oversaw the recent $1 billion redevelopment and expansion of the Fashion Show mall.
