Siena sewers make quilts for SafeNest

Members of the Siena Sew and Sews recently donated several infant and child-size quilts to SafeNest, a nonprofit agency providing 24-hour shelters for domestic violence victims and their children.

Sunrise Colony Co., developer of the age-qualified Siena community, donated the fabric for the quilts and club members worked on them throughout the year. Member Jean Duncan also donated several small pillows adorned with holiday themes.

"We wanted to select an organization that could really benefit from our sewing and we decided to do something for the children at SafeNest," said Alice Bowers, who heads the club's steering committee.

There are five Italian-themed collections of homes offering 14 single-story floor plans that range from 1,200 to 3,000 square feet.

Prices start from the $140,000s to the $600,000s.

In addition, the community will debut a new line of resort villas in early January. The Siena Villas will feature four floor plans ranging from 1,040 to 1,378 square feet. Prices are expected to start from the $140,000s.

A Tuscan-themed, 15,900-square-foot fitness center at the community features a 25-meter indoor pool and spa overlooking a golf course, an outdoor pool and spa, and lighted tennis and bocce courts. The fitness center also features exercise facilities, private saunas and steam rooms. There is also a wellness center and a full-service beauty salon and day spa.

The 13,500-square-foot golf clubhouse under construction will feature a pro shop, locker rooms and casual dining. Completion is scheduled for mid-2002.

A separate social center has a computer lab, billiard and card rooms, and room for classes, such as ballroom dancing and watercolor painting. A full-time activities manager organizes events.

Open on a daily-fee basis to the public, a par-72, 18-hole championship golf course winds through the village. One-third of the 1,900 homes will be built along the course, which incorporates the natural rolling terrain into its design. Community residents are given special rates and preferred tee times.

A palm-lined private road leads to a Tuscan tower at the center of the guard-gated entry. Security officers patrol the neighborhoods on a 24-hour basis.

To visit, take Interstate 215 or Sahara Avenue to Town Center Drive, go south to Siena Monte and turn left. The model homes are open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
