Globe-trotters settle in at Sun City Anthem

Golf, the right home design and amenities were Jerry and Carol Ann Nalewaik's reasons for selecting Del Webb Corp.'s Sun City Anthem age-qualified community in Henderson as the place to retire.

"The Revere at Anthem golf course is one of the main reasons we came to Anthem," said Jerry Nalewaik, who was among the winners at a men's tournament earlier this month. "I toured the course and realized I would never be bored with it."

The golf club features Lexington, a 7,143-yard, par-72 championship course, the first of three planned. Each will wind their way through the community.

"The course is built on the side of Black Mountain and 1,500 feet above Las Vegas Valley," said Nalewaik, who plays twice a week. "So players have spectacular views from anywhere along the course. Add to that 400 feet of vertical relief and you have a combination that makes golfing at The Revere both enjoyable and challenging."

Construction is under way on the community's second course, the 7,050-yard Concord. Also designed by architect Greg Nash and PGA golfer Billy Casper, it will feature parallel and single fairways meandering through canyons.

In addition to golf, Nalewaik was president of the Tennis Club last year, one of the community's fastest growing clubs.

The couple is also active in card clubs and uses the fitness center and indoor pool.

Many of the activities take place in Anthem Center, a 75,000-square-foot facility offering fitness, social and recreational opportunities for residents, as well as Trumpets Restaurant and Lounge, which is open to the public.

Married 36 years, the Nalewaiks have lived in many countries including Bangladesh, Colombia, Libya and England, due to his career as an oil company executive.

"There are so many cultural activities here that cannot be equaled in other areas. We enjoy the symphony and other musical events at the university, theater, chamber music. And of course the huge variety of restaurants and shopping is without comparison. We love it here," Nalewaik said.

"This is our 19th move, and we wanted this house to be perfect. We bought Del Webb's largest model, the Anthem, and took advantage of the Gold Key program to modify it to our needs.

"We expanded the house to 3,400 square feet making several rooms larger, including the kitchen, guest quarters and laundry room, and added a cedar closet. We are fussy about what we want, and particular about things being done right. Del Webb accommodated us with everything."

Nineteen standard models are available, ranging from 1,080 to 3,009 square feet and priced from the high $130,000s to more than $500,000.

To visit, take Eastern Avenue south, two miles past St. Rose Parkway.

The models and sales office are open daily from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
