Book underwritten by Hughes Corp. brings Mojave to life
The Howard Hughes Corp. has partnered with Bank West of Nevada to underwrite "Portraits of Nature," a new illustrated book about the Mojave Desert featuring more than 260 illustrations by Las Vegas artist Roy Purcell. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the book will benefit the Outside Las Vegas Foundation, a nonprofit organization committed to improving federal public lands around the Las Vegas Valley. "We are very pleased to partner with noted artist Roy Purcell to help bring about public awareness of the richness and beauty of the Las Vegas Valley," said Tom Warden, an executive with Hughes Corp. "We are also supportive of the Outside Las Vegas Foundation, an organization that has given voice to the public lands surrounding our community." The book includes illustrations that Purcell produced over a seven-year period. It imparts the artist's vision of the desert landscape that is home to about 1,500 species of plants, birds, mammals, reptiles and fish found within the 7 million acres surrounding Las Vegas, according to publisher K.C. DenDooven. Hughes Corp. develops the real estate holdings of the late Howard R. Hughes Jr.
