Summerlin's school workers honored
The nearly 2,000 individuals who work at schools within the master-planned community of Summerlin were honored recently at the third annual "Salute to Schools" event. "Schools are at the heart of Summerlin. And at the heart of our schools are many unsung heroes and heroines -- teachers, nurses, office workers and custodians. They have dedicated their lives to our young people and we want them to know we appreciate it," said Dan Van Epp, president of The Howard Hughes Corp. and founder of the Summerlin Children's Forum, the nonprofit organization which sponsored the event. Held at the J.W. Marriott Las Vegas Resort, the salute featured tributes by Rep. Shelley Berkley, Clark County School District Trustee Susan Brager-Wellman and Van Epp. Founded in 1996, the Summerlin Children's Forum was established as a public-private partnership to benefit children of the community. Since it was formed, it has established a $250,000 scholarship endowment that provides annual scholarships; funded enrichment programs, activities and assemblies through a grant program; and recognized excellence in education by honoring teachers, students and parent volunteers. The community is home to 17 public and private schools. Developed by Hughes Corp., Summerlin is comprised of villages that align the western valley. It is home to eight golf courses, more than 100 parks, 105 miles of trails, houses of worship, shopping centers, medical facilities, cultural facilities, business parks and nearly 100 model homes. Single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums are priced from the mid-$100,000s to more than $700,000. Custom-home sites ranging from one-half acre to three-quarters of an acre are priced from the high $300,000s to more than $1 million, and predesigned custom homes are priced from $500,000 to more than $1 million. Apartments offer monthly rents starting from the high $700s. To visit the community's home finding center, travel west on Sahara Avenue past Hualapai Way to Town Center Drive and turn north. Or, take Interstate 215 to Sahara Avenue and head east to Town Center. The center is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
