Educators honored in Summerlin
The 1,200-plus people who work at the 16 public and private schools in Summerlin were honored at the second annual "Salute to Schools" event, which was organized by the Summerlin Children's Forum. Dan Van Epp, president of The Howard Hughes Corp., the developer of Summerlin, said schools are the "heart" of the master-planned community. "And at the heart of our schools are many unsung heroes and heroines -- teachers, nurses, office workers, janitors. They have dedicated their lives to our young people, and we want them to know we appreciate it," he said. The event was hosted by the Regent Las Vegas and one of many organized by the Summerlin Children's Forum, a nonprofit organization that was established as a public/private partnership for the benefit of children within the Summerlin community. In its four-year history, the forum has: established a $250,000 endowment to fund annual scholarships; funded numerous enrichment programs, activities and assemblies at the community's schools; facilitated the establishment of a track-break program for youngsters who attend year-round schools; and established after-hours technology centers at three schools. Summerlin aligns the western edge of the Las Vegas Valley. It has 12 major parks, more than 45 neighborhood parks, more than 45 completed miles of a 100-mile trail system, houses of worship, cultural facilities, shopping centers, medical centers and more than 150 model homes.
