Construction begins on Sun City Anthem course
Del Webb Corp. has begun construction on its second golf course at Sun City Anthem, part of the developer's Anthem master-planned community in Henderson. The age-restricted community's second golf course is planned to open in fall 2001, and the first driving range is scheduled to open by early January. The 7,050-yard course follows The Revere golf club, which opened in April 1999. Designed by course architect Greg Nash and PGA Hall-of-Famer Billy Casper, the new course will incorporate the canyons of Black Mountain. The pair has designed all Sun City golf courses in Las Vegas, including Eagle Crest, Highland Falls and Palm Valley at Sun City Summerlin; Desert Willow at Sun City MacDonald Ranch; and The Revere. "This course is a combination of parallel fairways and single fairways that meander through the canyons," Nash said. "It creates a variety of golf experiences for players. We have also designed some very dramatic elevation changes from the tees to greens, which is a pretty dynamic view when players are hitting off the green. "The 11th hole is a short par-5. It's a very `risk-reward' golf hole, which means it's a short par where you can reach the green in two, but have to hit a very exact shot to get there." He said No. 18 will be one of the course's most challenging. "The concluding hole will be a dramatic downhill par-5 that drops about 100 feet from the tee to the green and is framed with 18 sand traps," Nash said. The course's landscaping will include 150 acres of turfgrass, ryegrass and bentgrass. "The landscape palette will be very colorful on this course, creating a unique visual experience for golfers," Nash said. "Trees will include mesquite, ash, Mondale pines and purple leaf plums. There will also be what we term `mass planting' areas on this course, where we landscape large clusters of colorful plants and flowers together to create a tremendous impact of color and vegetation." Another community amenity is the 75,000-square-foot Anthem Center, which provides fitness, hobby, social and dining opportunities. Fifteen models, ranging from 1,080 to 3,009 square feet and more through the community's Gold Key program, are offered. Homes are priced from the high $130,000s to more than $500,000. To visit, take Eastern Avenue south, two miles past St. Rose Parkway. Models are open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
