New parks planned in Summerlin

Three new parks are in design for Summerlin, a master-planned community with more than 100 parks ranging from less than an acre to nearly 70 acres. Of these, 20 are major village parks measuring 5 acres or larger, several of which measure more than 20 acres.

The three parks under design include South Tower Park and The Vistas Park, both in The Vistas village. The Paseos Park, which will be located in a new village by the same name, also is in the planning stages.

South Tower Park will encompass 7 acres and mirrors North Tower Park, according to Gerry Robbins, vice president of detail planning for The Howard Hughes Corp., developer of Summerlin. The park will feature play areas, a spray basin, picnic and barbecue area, play areas and restrooms.

The Vistas Park will encompass more than 23 acres and will serve residents west of Interstate 215.

A 13-acre park will serve as the focal point of The Paseos village, situated west of Interstate 215 and north of Charleston Boulevard.

"The Summerlin master plan was created to maximize access to parks and trails for all residents, regardless of where they live in the community. Parks and open spaces are core elements of Summerlin village design," Hughes executive Larry Brocato said.

Some are developed around a specific recreational theme. For example, The Crossing Park has two full-size lighted soccer fields; The Trails Park is home to the Summerlin Little League with three lighted baseball/softball fields; The Arbors Tennis and Play Park features five lighted tennis courts plus a stadium court and a pro shop; and Cottonwood Canyon Park is a paseo offering a mile of trail-side scenery.

"However, many Summerlin parks are also designed for multiple uses to meet a variety of recreational needs," said Brocato, pointing out that Summerlin Centre Community Park features lighted soccer fields that double as a venue for special events.

"Summerlin also has numerous parks that primarily feature open areas and playgrounds for casual and informal play. These parks serve as gathering places for residents, enhancing social interaction and a feeling of community connectedness," he said.

Other park amenities include horseshoes, bocce and shuffleboard courts, and a tricycle course.

Summerlin has ranked as the nation's best-selling master-planned community for 10 of the past 11 years, according to independent surveys. It is home to eight golf courses, more than 100 miles of trails, 16 schools, houses of worship, shopping centers, medical and cultural facilities, business parks and more than 120 model homes.

Single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums are priced from the mid-$100,000s to more than $700,000. Custom-home sites are priced from the high $500,000s to more than $1 million, and predesigned custom homes are priced from $2.1 million. Apartments offer monthly rents starting from the low $800s.
