Fairway fund-raiser: KB scores for Make-A-Wish

SPECIAL TO REAL ESTATE

A charity golf tournament sponsored by KB Home raised $30,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Nevada.

The tournament was held this month at Rhodes Ranch Golf Club.

"Make-A-Wish is an organization that fulfills dreams of children with life-threatening illnesses," said Kendall Tenney, vice president of the foundation. "For many kids, their greatest wish is to go to Disney World. Others want to meet celebrities, and we even had one child meet the entire U.S. women's soccer team."

He said the money will go directly to fund wishes.

"Through this donation, we'll be able to fund about 10 wishes. This is about 10 percent of the wishes we are usually able to grant in one year, so it will make a huge impact."

KB Home President Jim Widner said that the company and its contractors were delighted to assist the organization.

"It is important for KB Home and all of our building partners to help the community in which we live," Widner said. "The Make-A-Wish Foundation fulfills dreams for children who may not get the chance to live those dreams without assistance. We like making dreams come true."

The tournament featured several celebrity players as well, including Hugh McElhenny, Chuck Thomas and Mike Cofer, who are all former members of the San Francisco 49ers football team. Cofer is now a race-car driver sponsored by KB Home. Also on hand were Joe Frederick, Marc Magliarditti, Mike McBain and Kirk Dewaele of the Las Vegas Wranglers hockey club, and entertainers Sandy Hackett and Steve Rossi.

"We are grateful that KB Home plays such an important role in the community," Tenney said. "They have helped Make-A-Wish in a way that was incredibly generous and needed. The bottom line is that wishes do something doctors, hospitals and medicine can't provide. They make the children forget about their illnesses."

The event marked the second year of the tournament. Last year's tourney raised $20,000 for Rebuilding Together, which provides home rehabilitation services to low-income homeowners.

The builder offers one-stop shopping at its KB Home Studio. The 22,000-square-foot design center is located at 7440 S. Industrial Road, Suite 201, just south of Warm Springs Road. Through its Homebuyers Club, potential buyers can receive free financial assistance including credit reports.
