Summerlin girls cheer on camp

Nearly 30 Summerlin girls between the ages of 10 and 13 recently participated in the master-planned community's annual Cheer Camp at The Trails Community Center where they learned the basics of cheerleading including jumps, cheers and dances.

"There is just something extra special about Cheer Camp. You give these young, enthusiastic girls pompoms, and they all become star performers," said Lezlie Barnson-DeNardin, director of community relations for The Summerlin Council, which organized the camp.

In addition to cheerleading lessons, the camp included activities such as swimming at the community pool, a bowling field trip and a pizza party.

"It is a fun, social activity as much as an athletic camp," Barnson-DeNardin said.

The council, the nonprofit branch of the Summerlin Community Association which organizes social, recreational, cultural and educational activities for residents, coordinated two additional summer camps this year.

Developed by The Howard Hughes Corp., Summerlin is located in the western valley. It is home to 107 parks, more than 100 miles of trails, and houses of worship.

Nearly 120 models showcase the available single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums. Homes are priced from the mid-$300,000s to more than $2 million. Custom-home sites are priced from the $500,000s.

Monthly rent for apartments starts from the mid-$800s.
