Red Rock Country Club turns lights on tennis
Red Rock Country Club members and guests recently celebrated another milestone at the Summerlin community -- the lighting of the Summerlin's nine hard-surface courts. The center features a stadium court where professional tennis exhibitions and amateur tournaments are held, as well as tennis activity throughout the day and evening. "This is a great bonus for our tennis players at Red Rock Country Club, who can now plan matches for the evening and play under the lights, especially during this time of the year," said tennis director Jeff Foley, who came to Las Vegas 17 years ago to earn a college degree and play tennis for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. "Tennis was in a lull in the 1980s and early 1990s, but it's making a huge comeback. It's a national trend and we see its popularity growing at every age level. "Tennis, like golf, is a sport the whole family can play together. We see it all the time here at Red Rock Country Club. Both tennis and golf are sports you can play all your life. And, you don't have to live in the Red Rock Country Club community to belong to its sports club, although many of our members are residents here, too." Foley, along with head tennis pro Crombie Hatfield and pro Ben Coates, give individual and group tennis lessons to people of all ages, ranging from 3- and 4-year-olds to adults who have never picked up a racquet. "Tennis is great for young children's hand-eye coordination. I see real progress in these kids right away. It is my opinion that tennis helps keep older kids healthy, busy and out of trouble," he said. "And, of course, it keeps you in great shape at any age. There are tournaments for people in their 80s and older." Other amenities at the guard-gated community include the first of two planned 18-hole golf courses designed by golfer Arnold Palmer, as well as a practice facility with a double-ended driving range, putting green and chipping areas. A 44,000-square-foot main clubhouse features a golf pro shop, banquet facilities, a meeting room and two dining rooms, and an 8,000-square-foot sports club offers exercise equipment, saunas, steam rooms, an aerobics studio, locker rooms and a supervised children's play center. An aquatic center features several pools, a children's splash and a spray mini-park, and an outdoor grill. Located at the foothills of Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, the country club offers homes measuring from 2,155 to 8,000 square feet. Prices range from the $300,000s to more than $2 million. To visit, take Sahara Avenue west past Town Center Drive and follow the signs. Or, take Interstate 215 to Sahara and go west. The sales office and models are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Sunrise Colony Co. is also developing the Siena age-qualified community in Summerlin.
