Resident finds lucky break at Sun City Anthem

Garth Clifford first became a billiards aficionado when he owned a tavern in 1967. As a resident of Sun City Anthem, an age-qualified community within Del Webb Corp.'s Anthem master-planned community in Henderson, Clifford has expanded his interest in the game by becoming a tournament organizer.

Clifford and his wife, Rosemary, retired two years ago from Kirkland, Wash., and began searching for a new home in an area with a better climate. After visiting Florida, Palm Springs, Calif., and Phoenix, they decided on Las Vegas.

"There are more buffets here," Clifford said. "Actually, we love it here at Anthem. We made the right decision."

They selected the Jefferson model, which features two bedrooms, a great room, two-car garage and covered patio. It is one of 17 available models ranging from 1,080 to 3,009 square feet. The community's Gold Key program allows for even more floor plans.

Prices range from the $130,000s to more than $500,000.

The Sun City Anthem Pool/Billiards Club, organized by Clifford and fellow resident Chuck Heinzelman, has grown to 40 members. Tournaments are held twice weekly and are open to all residents.

Tournaments are held in the Anthem Center, a 75,000-square-foot fitness, social and recreational facility for residents. The center also houses Trumpets Restaurant, which is open to the public.

Another amenity is Revere at Anthem, the community's first 18-hole championship golf course. Another is nearing completion, and a new clubhouse is scheduled to open in September.

To visit, take Eastern Avenue south, two miles past St. Rose Parkway to the entrance of Anthem. Models are open daily from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
