Virginian family chooses U.S. Home

Laurie and A.J. Peters had 10 days to find a new home after arriving in the valley from Herndon, Va., and wanted a place near school and recreational facilities to accommodate their four children.

After deciding on a site in Boulder City, the Peterses contacted U.S. Home Custom Residential and used the company's two-story Pacific Heights model as their starting point.

Laurie Peters was pleased following a tour of the floor plan at the builder's Copperfield neighborhood.

"It was so much easier to be able to imagine the design changes we would want to make when we were actually standing inside a model rather than just looking at a blueprint. We loved the towering portico entry, but we really wanted a custom home that was different, and had great exterior impact too," Peters said.

The Peterses' home measures about 3,900 square feet and features five bedrooms and 3 1/2 baths. The base model for this floor plan starts from the $200,000s.

Working with company's builders, the Peterses added numerous options, among them: French doors in the formal living room and den, an expanded family room and breakfast nook, an island workstation and pantry rear door in the kitchen, a powder room, and the conversion of the loft into a den.

Upstairs, the home was expanded to create separate bedrooms for 14-year-old twins Adam and Andrew, while the bonus room was extended over the garage to create two bedrooms for daughters Amanda, 9, and Katlyn, 11, with walk-in closets and a "jack and jill" bath.

The owner suite features French doors opening to a veranda. The owner bath features cultured-marble dual vanities and a separate tub and glass-enclosed shower.

Laurie Peters praised the builder's design center.

"I could go to one place instead of going all over town trying to coordinate the colors, the tile, rock, fixtures. At the design center we could lay everything out, matching the cabinet design and finish to the ceramic-tile trims, coordinate the granite counters with the tile flooring ... We did all these changes and still stayed on budget," she said.

U.S. Home Custom Residential is a division of U.S. Home, which also builds production homes throughout Southern Nevada.

The sales office for the custom-home division is located on Buffalo Drive, north of Sahara Avenue. The office is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. except Monday, when it opens at 11 a.m.
