Head Start opens new classrooms
Festivities marked the grand opening of the $4.6 million Head Start learning center in Henderson, as well as the ground breaking of the adjacent Harry Reid Center for Families and Children. "This new Head Start learning center is a wonderful example of city, county, federal and community-based organizations working together for the enrichment of our children and families in Southern Nevada," said Marcia Rose Walker, executive director of the Clark County's Economic Opportunity Board Community Action Partnership, which operates 17 Head Start centers in Southern Nevada. The 18,000-square-foot building, which is located at 180 Westminster Way, will accommodate about 250 children, ranging from infants to age 5. Eligibility is tied to income, however services are available for children with special needs. Registration is under way. Federal Head Start and day-care programs are expected to begin Tuesday, Sept. 2. The facility includes 12 classrooms, a play area with two covered playgrounds, full-service kitchen and community room. Project architects were Swisher & Hall AIA and PGA Perez-Green Architects. During the ceremony, Sen. Harry Reid presented a $500,000 check from the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Education for the Head Start and Reid projects. Additional funding was provided by grants from the city of Henderson, Clark County and Henderson Allied Community Advocates. The land was donated by Henderson Presbyterian Church, which is located next to the new facilities. According to EOB Administrator Angela Quinn, the 4,500-square-foot Reid Center is set for completion in February. Designed by Swisher-Hall, the center will house the HACA office, an EOB satellite and other nonprofit providers.
