Summerlin hosts camp of games

Nearly 30 children participated in the inaugural Fun and Games Camp at The Willows Community Center in Summerlin.

Geared for youngsters between the ages of 6 and 12, the camp focused on game playing, according to Brock Wilson, recreation supervisor for The Summerlin Council, the nonprofit branch of the Summerlin Community Association.

"The Summerlin Council has coordinated youth summer camps for years," he said. "This year we decided to add the Fun and Games Camp for kids who enjoy learning and mastering all kinds of games. It was a great success."

Participants enjoyed kickball, dodgeball, basketball, chess, dominos, table tennis and several board games. Campers also could create games of their own.

"This activity stimulated creativity and taught participants leadership skills as they were responsible for teaching their peers how to play their game," Wilson said.

Other camp activities included daily walks, swimming at the community center's pool, as well as a bowling field trip.

The council coordinated two other youth camps this summer: the Cheer Camp and the All-Sports Camp. It also organizes dozens of classes annually for children, from toddlers to teens.

Developed by The Howard Hughes Corp., Summerlin ranked as the country's best-selling master-planned community for much of the last decade, according to independent surveys.

Located along the valley's western rim, it is home to parks, trails, houses of worship, retail and business centers, medical facilities and cultural facilities.

Nearly 120 models showcase the available single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums, which are priced from the mid-$300,000s. Custom-home sites are priced from the $500,000s.

Monthly rent for apartments within the community starts from the $800s.
