Howard Hughes Corp. announces donations


     The Howard Hughes Corp. donated nearly $100,000 to 13 Southern Nevada organizations in July.
      Nevada Development Authority received $40,000 to support its annual capital campaign. Nevada Symphony Orchestra received $25,000 in sponsorship of its summer concert series. The Nevada office of The Nature Conservancy received $10,000.
      The Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce received two $5,000 contributions, one to underwrite the Community Achievement Awards to be held in September, and another to sponsor Preview 2000 in January 2000.
      Other organizations receiving contributions included the American Cancer Society, the Las Vegas Philharmonic, Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas, the Lied Institute for Real Estate Studies, the Boy Scouts of America Boulder Dam Council, the Tiger Woods Foundation, Las Vegas Metro Chapter City of Lights Chorus and Palo Verde High School.
      According to Dan Van Epp, president of The Howard Hughes Corp., the company has a history of philanthropy in the Las Vegas Valley.
      "Supporting worthwhile programs, causes and organizations is not only an opportunity for The Howard Hughes Corp. to share its success, it's an obligation," Van Epp said. "Investing in the community pays dividends of all kinds for everyone touched by our contributions."
      An affiliate of The Rouse Co., The Howard Hughes Corp. is engaged in developing the real estate holdings of the late Howard R. Hughes Jr. Headquartered in Las Vegas, the company employs about 200 people in Southern Nevada.
      Major projects include Summerlin, a 22,500-acre master-planned community; Hughes Center, a mixed-use business center off of Paradise Road; Hughes Airport Center, a business and industrial park adjacent to McCarran International Airport; The Crossing Business Center and several Class A office buildings within Summerlin; Hughes Cheyenne Center, an industrial park in North Las Vegas; and Fashion Show mall on the Strip.
      The Rouse Co., founded more than 50 years ago, operates more than 220 properties encompassing office, retail, research and development, industrial and hotel space, as well as the master-planned community of Columbia, Md. A publicly traded real estate investment trust, the company acquired The Howard Hughes Corp. through merger in June 1996.
