Southern Highlands aids charities
Southern Highlands Golf Club and Charitable Foundation recently donated $80,000 to Candlelighters for Childhood Cancer of Southern Nevada and Project Sunshine, two nonprofit organizations that assist children in need. The funds were raised at the foundation's annual Governor's Black-Tie Invitational and Gala. Donations of $40,000 to each organization were presented at Camp Firefly, a camp for children with cancer operated jointly by the two agencies. Held last month at Torino Ranch, which is located at the base of Mount Charleston, the camp provided an opportunity for children with critical or life-threatening illnesses to enjoy traditional summer camp activities such as boating, swimming, rock-wall climbing, arts and crafts, talent shows, and archery. In addition, it helped them create and strengthen bonds with their siblings, who were invited to attend. One of the camp's 17 bunkhouses was recently completed and dedicated to the golf club and charitable foundation. "Southern Highlands ... contributes thousands of dollars that really help our organization make a difference for the children and families of Southern Nevada that are dealing with the devastation and hardship that can come with cancer," Celeste Ochal, director of business development for Candlelighters, said. Since it was formed in 2000, the foundation has donated more than $2 million to local and state charities. It supports programs designed to improve the quality of life for children, teens and women in Nevada.
