The Gardens village lives up to its name

Future residents of Summerlin may have the opportunity to work the soil in the master-planned community's newest village, The Gardens. The village's planned amenities include a 20-acre park with garden plots, according to Charles Kubat, vice president of planning and design for The Howard Hughes Corp., which oversees Summerlin's development.
"We are currently working with The Summerlin Council to establish garden groups interested in utilizing and managing these garden plots within the park," Kubat said. "Gardening continues to be one of America's most popular hobbies, and the concept of community gardening is making a comeback in many cities and towns across the country."
Six of the village's nine planned developments -- seven single-family neighborhoods and two multifamily projects -- will surround the oval-shaped park. To complement the garden theme, Kubat said many of the homes will offer interior courtyards, sun rooms and bay windows.
The east side of the park will accommodate such activities as bocce, shuffleboard and horseshoes. The garden plots will also be in this area, which is expected to open late this year.
Central to the park will be a community center, which is under construction and scheduled to open in February 2001. The center will be open to residents and community groups, and will include an event lawn for special activities.
The park's west side will feature tennis and basketball courts. A roller hockey arena is planned. This area is also expected to be completed in first-quarter 2001.
"We spent considerable time planning The Gardens Park to meet the diverse interests of a variety of residents of all ages," Kubat said. "We are confident the park will have wide appeal and will become an important community amenity."
A private college preparatory school is located within the village, which will also feature retail and employment centers and a house of worship.
"Like its name implies, The Gardens village will feature a more lush plant palette than many of Summerlin's previously developed villages," he said. "Through enhanced vegetation, accent planting and traditional garden walls and trellises, the village will embody a garden-like quality. Right down to the soft desert green color of village walls and the use of stone, The Gardens will feel greener and more oasis-like upon its completion."
Summerlin is being developed along the western edge of the valley. The Gardens is a 410-acre village south of Desert Inn Road.
Country Gardens by Pulte Homes opened recently with floor plans ranging from 2,447 to 3,131 square feet, and priced from the high $200,000s. Each village in Summerlin has its own major park or golf course. To date, there are two Tournament Players Club golf courses plus six others that are open. The community has 12 major parks, 45 neighborhood parks, 40 completed miles of trails, houses of worship, schools, shopping centers, medical centers, business parks and cultural facilities.
Single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums are priced from $90,000 to more than $700,000. Buyers can tour more than 250 models.
Custom-home sites from one-quarter acre to one-third acre are priced from $90,000 to $300,000, and predesigned custom homes are priced from $500,000 to more than $1 million.
