Former pro baseball player scores home at Mountain Falls

After relocating to Southern Nevada from Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Jay Spurgeon set out to find a community with a slower pace than Las Vegas.

The former professional baseball player found exactly what he was looking for at Mountain Falls, a 1,050-acre master-planned golf course community located 45 miles west of Interstate 15.

Spurgeon said he was impressed with the community from the moment he laid eyes on Mountain Falls Golf Club, a par-72 parkland course that anchors the William Lyon single-story communities of Cascata, Tramonto and Bella Sera.

"I fell in love with Mountain Falls as soon as I drove in and saw the waterfall on the golf course," said Spurgeon, who pitched for the Baltimore Orioles in the late 1990s.

These days Spurgeon has a career in outside sales. His fiancée, Tabitha Febrey, and their newborn baby, Tyla Spurgeon, are his new priority.

"The golf course design is as impressive as the value of the homes at Mountain Falls. I'm amazed that I got so much house for the money. I like the Las Vegas area and Mountain Falls provides easy access, but out here we have the benefits of clean air and beautiful views," Spurgeon said.

"With everything Mountain Falls offers for my family, driving 35 or 40 minutes is definitely worth it."

After touring Tramonto's model homes, Spurgeon considered Plan 4, a 2,445-square-foot design, and Plan 1 with 1,970 square feet.

Ultimately, Spurgeon found the open layout of Plan 1 impossible to resist. The floor plan includes a great room, courtyard entry, three-car garage, sit-down vanity at the master bath and kitchen island workstation with extended counter top seating.

Buyers can opt for up to three bedrooms and as many baths.

"We went from bigger to smaller because I just loved the openness and flow of the rooms in Plan 1. Our lot offers great long views and we're just an eight iron away from the golf course," said Spurgeon, who enjoys walking to the course from his home. "With a brand new baby and my job I'm very busy, but the course is in pristine shape and I'll play it regularly. You can't beat the price."

The William Lyon single-story communities of Cascata, Tramonto and Bella Sera at Mountain Falls are priced from the low $200,000s.

Classic Homes, Desert Wind Homes and Celebrate Homes will debut communities shortly.

"I was so impressed with William Lyon Homes," said Spurgeon. "The house was built on time and we closed the week we were told we'd close. The sales agents were phenomenal. I couldn't have asked for more."

Resident amenities include a clubhouse with a fitness center, lounge, two pools, a spa and a water play area.

To visit Mountain Falls, travel approximately 45 miles west on Highway 160 (Blue Diamond Road) past Interstate 15. Before reaching Pahrump, turn left on Manse Road. Proceed to Hafen Ranch and turn right, then left on Lakeview.

The sales office is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
