Hughes Corp. donates Summerlin `cows'

The Howard Hughes Corp., developer of Summerlin, has donated two of its 13 cows from Cow Parade Las Vegas 2002 to the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District.

"Udderly Spectacular," adorned with images of the Strip and Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area painted by Mary Beth Butman, is now on display at the Sahara West Library; while "Booooker," painted by pupils from Booker Elementary School, is on display at the West Las Vegas Library.

Cow Parade officially came to Summerlin last October, when the hand painted bovines "grazed" on Town Center Drive between West Sahara Avenue and West Charleston Boulevard. The life-size cows were constructed from fiberglass and weighed about 100 pounds each.

Collecting and displaying art is an important function of the library district, according to Denise Shapiro, gallery services coordinator.

"Libraries serve to enhance learning opportunities and cultural awareness," she said. "The cows add to the cultural offerings of the library, and we are grateful to have them on display for patrons to enjoy."

In fact, the Sahara West Library held a party to welcome its new cow. Attended by scores of children who enjoyed cow arts and crafts, and ice cream sundaes, the afternoon party featured a "give the cow a nickname" drawing. The winning name, submitted by Raylene Lara, 12, was "Mookey."

"Cow Parade was a fun, lighthearted art display designed to entertain onlookers," said Tom Warden, vice president of community and government relations for Hughes Corp. "Thousands enjoyed the display in Summerlin and we hope thousands will continue to enjoy the cows at the local libraries."
