Summerlin sells 17,000th home, sets national sales pace

The Summerlin master-planned community recently reached a milestone with the sale of its 17,000th new home. The sale, which occurred the week of July 16, comes 10 years into the community's development and underscores its status as the nation's best-selling master plan, according to Stew Gibbons, executive vice president of The Howard Hughes Corp., the developer.

"By year-end 2001, we expect to have sold well over 18,000 new homes," Gibbons said. "We are continuing to build a variety of homes in all price ranges to meet Las Vegas' sustained demand for quality housing."

The community, which covers more than 36 square miles along the western Las Vegas Valley, is home to more than 60,000 residents. It is being developed as a series of villages.

More than one-third of the community's acreage is dedicated for open areas, including parks, trails, golf courses, open space and natural areas, according to Gibbons. These include nearly 100 village and neighborhood parks, 90-plus miles of completed trails, playgrounds, and sport courts and fields.

The community's newest major park, The Gardens, features bocce, horseshoe and shuffleboard courts.

For golfers, there are eight courses, including two Tournament Players Club facilities and the first-ever Bear's Best course, which features replications of holes designed by Jack Nicklaus.

Other amenities include 16 public and private schools, houses of worship, employment centers, shopping centers, cultural facilities and medical centers.

Homes are available in a variety of styles, including single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums. Prices start from under $100,000 to more than $700,000.

Custom lots range from one-quarter acre to three-quarters of an acre and are priced from the mid-$100,000s to more than $1 million. Pre-designed custom homes are priced from $500,000 to more than $1 million.

To visit the home finding center, take Sahara Avenue west, past Hualapai Way, to Town Center Drive. Or, take Interstate 215 to Sahara. The center is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
